What Is Sports Massage?

Just as the name suggests it is popular with sports people as it can enhance performance and aid in injury prevention and management, but these are benefits we can all enjoy!

Sports massage is a no-nonsense approach to improve soft tissue condition, which aims to stretch tight muscles and help to stimulate inactive muscles.

Having a sports massage is different to a relaxation massage like you would expect from a spa treatment. This is because it uses techniques that have either been developed from traditional massage or borrowed from other disciplines such as physiotherapy. These techniques are referred to as remedial massage. These are used to help stimulate the repair process and free up tight muscle and tissue. Some examples of remedial techniques I use are:

Remedial Techniques

  • Soft tissue release – this is a lock and stretch technique which can be used in lots of different ways to help stretch and unstick congested tissue.

  • Muscle energy technique – using this can help to stretch muscles or encourage inactive muscles to get working again.

  • Neuromuscular techniques – this works with the nervous system to help get rid of pain and tension.

  • Fascial release – using this technique can help to free up the connective tissue that surrounds the muscles.

Who Can Benefit?

Anybody can benefit from a sports massage. You don’t have to be a sports person to feel the benefits. Stress, fatigue, muscular tension and injuries can affect us all, whether you are an avid gardener, do it yourselfer, busy housewives/mums/dads/careers or have a stressful job. You should find massaged relaxing whether you are active or sedentary.

A lot of people gain the most from a deep tissue massage from a sports therapist, because they can feel the knots being ‘ironed out’. Deep massage can also make you very aware of your own body and how you react to certain situations, and by taking early action and listening to your body you can reduce stress levels and relax.
